Frequently Asked Questions
1. Are there dues?
Yes. Please come to a meeting or two and an event. After that, you can make a decision if you want to join the crew. We are asking that all members pay $15.00 a year in dues. We will put the dues in a dedicated account for the group, and provide updates on the account at meetings and by request. We will use the dues for the administration of the group, i.e. membership in national Star Trek groups, other fees, purchases that benefit the whole of the group, etc. Any use of the dues will be voted on by the group and we will keep a strict accounting.
2. Where did the "USS Cordilleran" name come from?
All Star Trek groups traditionally name their groups as if they are starships. "USS" means "United Space Ship". Cordilleran refers to a system of mountain ranges, valleys, plateaus, and plains that are often parallel to each other. The term comes from the Spanish word cordillera, which is a diminutive of cuerda, meaning "cord," "string," or "rope." The Cordilleras of North America is a region that includes the Rocky Mountains, the Sierra Nevadas, and the mountains in between. The Canadian portion of this cordillera includes the Rocky Mountains and the Coast Mountains.
3. Will you have virtual meetings and activities?
Yes. We will virtually stream our in-person meetings. Depending on interest, we will also have virtual activities.
4. What are the age requirements to join the group?
Anyone 18 years of age and above is welcome to join the group.
We ask that anyone 16 and 17 years of age show us parental approval for participation.
We ask that anyone 15 years and younger have a responsible adult present with them at any meetings and activities.
5. What kinds of activities will the group host?
We will host whatever group members are interested in doing. This could be a wide range of activities, from Star Trek or science fiction related activities to group hikes or dinners out. Anyone may propose an activity at a meeting. We will ask for someone from the group to lead the activity. We'll add the activity to our calendar and have an option for RSVPs, so we can get a sense of how many people are attending. This is for both virtual and in-person activities. If the activity is primarily for members 15 and younger, we will ask that a responsible adult also be present at the activity.
6. What charities will the group support?
The USS Cordilleran is not a 501(c)(3) non-profit. However, we will choose one or two charities a year and conduct a fundraising event for that chosen charity. All money from the fundraising activity will go as a donation to that charity. Any member of the group can propose a charity to support. As a group, we will vote on the charities to support.
7. Do I have to attend the meetings in person to join?
No, you do not have to attend the meetings in person to join. We will be streaming the meetings virtually. However, virtual activities will be limited to interest, so there may be more limited options for virtual participation in the group. As an extension of this, you do not have to live in the Northern Colorado or Southern Wyoming areas to join the group, but as stated above, virtual participation for the non-local members may be limited.
